How to set and keep a daily loss limit

A guide from Ticky · Updated October 17, 2026

A daily loss limit is the amount you allow yourself to lose in one day before you stop. It turns one bad day from a disaster into a normal, survivable cost of trading.

Why it matters

Bad days are when habits are at their worst: revenge trades, bigger sizes, trades outside your plan. A daily limit stops the day before those habits can turn a loss into a large one. Many prop firms make a daily limit a hard rule for exactly this reason.

How to pick the number

How to actually stop

  1. Get a warning before the limit. Being told you are close is what gives you time to slow down.
  2. Stop for the day, not for an hour. Coming back after lunch “because it's a new session” is the most common way limits fail.
  3. Close the platform. Out of sight is out of reach.
  4. Review it the next day, calmly. What happened before the limit was hit? That is where the next improvement is.

How Ticky helps. Ticky keeps your daily loss limit in your TradingView chart, warns you as you get close, and says so plainly when you pass it. You set the number; it never blocks a trade.
